Homemade Twix Bars

These Homemade Twix Bars have all the delicious layers of the popular candy, but made with wholesome ingredients. Sweet, delicious, and easy to make. They also happen to be paleo, gluten free, dairy free, and vegan. You will absolutely love these!

Homemade Twix Bars

Twix used to be one of my favorite candy bars. I was never big on any chocolate candy, but I made a couple exceptions and Twix was one of them. The shortbread crust, the thick gooey layer of caramel and the thin layer of chocolate- it was perfection. Recreating it using real ingredients was fun and result was even better than expected. These don’t taste like a healthy treat at all- they are just as good, if not better than the original.

Although it looks like a long list of ingredients, it’s mostly the same ingredients repeated in each layer. It takes a little time to complete it, but it’s easy and most of the time is waiting for it to harden in the fridge. They are well worth the time because the final result is a whole pan of cookie bars! Cut them small because they are rich.

The caramel isn’t technically a caramel at all. It’s almond butter that is sweetened with maple and has a little coconut oil mixed in. It’s easier than a traditional caramel that has to come to a certain temperature and can easily be over/under cooked and not turn out right. It’s crazy how much it actually tastes like caramel. I also made a sunflower butter version that was equally delicious- it wasn’t as pretty though so the almond butter was used. Feel free to use your favorite nut butter for that layer.

Homemade Twix Bars

So do these taste exactly like a traditional Twix? No, they have more of a maple flavor than the original and the cookie bottom isn’t quite as crunchy. That doesn’t make them any less delicious though!

Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350° and line a 8x8 pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine almond flour, coconut flour, coconut oil, maple syrup and vanilla. Mix until well combined. Press into the bottom of the prepared pan and bake for 11-13 minutes, or until sides are slightly brown. Let cool while preparing the next layer.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine almond butter, coconut oil, maple syrup, vanilla, and salt. Mix until completely smooth. If needed, microwave in 15 second increments to make mixing easier. Pour over cooled crust and place in the fridge to harden. Refrigerate 1-2 hours.
  4. Once the caramel mixture is hardened, prepare the chocolate mixture. In a medium bowl, combine coconut oil, cacao powder, maple, and salt. Mix until smooth and pour over the caramel layer. A whisk usually works best for mixing. Refrigerate until hardened- about an hour.
  5. Once the chocolate is set, remove the candy by pulling up on the parchment paper. Place entire square on a cutting board and cut in half one way and in eighths the other way, creating 16 candy sticks.
  6. Store in fridge.

  1. These are delicious!! Do you have the nutritional value for the bars?

    1. Thanks, J! I don’t, I’m sorry! There are many sites that can help you calculate that if you desire to know all the info. My Fitness Pal is a popular one. Thanks for trying them!

So, I am making the recipe this morning and got confused by the second step – it says to add salt, but salt is not listed in the shortbread ingredients. It does not say anything about adding the vanilla to the shortbread. I was not sure if I should add some salt instead of the vanilla (but 1 teaspoon sounded like a lot!); or, if I should add the vanilla and also a little salt. I appreciate any help!

    Happy Memorial Day!

    1. Hi Fran- I hope it’s not too late! I’m sorry for the confusion and thank you for catching that mistake. Add the vanilla and no slat to that layer. I fixed it now and hope that makes sense. Happy Memorial Day! Hope you enjoy these bars 🙂

  3. Tiara says:

Can I make these without the coconut flour?

    1. Hi Tiara- sorry for the delayed response! The coconut flour helps bind the shortbread layer together. You could try another flour like arrowroot or tapioca and I would recommend using about 1/4 cup. I can’t guarantee that will work, but that’s what I would suggest. Hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions.

These are PERFECT! Thank you so much.

    1. You’re welcome, Melinda! I’m so glad you like them!

  5. These are amazing. Just made my 3rd batch. I now add crushed mixed nuts in to the Caramel layer, just to add an extra crunch

    1. That sounds amazing! I’m going to have to try that! Thanks for making them and for the great feedback, Jo!

  6. Denise Smith says:

These are great! I double the chocolate layer for more even coverage. One batch seems really thin to me. Keep these great recipes coming!

    1. Thanks, Denise! Thanks for trying them and for the great feedback! I like your idea of doubling the chocolate- sounds delicious! I’ll definitely keep the recipes coming 🙂

  7. Hi! I’m so excited to make these. It’s hard (but necessary) to give up treats for the sake of health. My question is: Can you cut the cookie caramel layer in to bars or squares before pouring the chocolate over them so they more closely resemble a twix bar?

    1. Hi Michelle- yes, that’s a wonderful idea! I didn’t do it that way because I thought it would be too labor intensive, but if you’re willing to make the effort I think they would be delicious! I would suggest doubling the chocolate to make sure there’s enough to coat all sides. Hope you enjoy!

I have made these twix bars twice – love them. I too had to double the chocolate layer. Is there a nutritional value anywhere? Like calories, fat, etc.,
    Thanks!

    1. Thanks for trying my recipe, Joanne! So glad you like them! I don’t post nutritional facts, but you can use My Fitness Pal (the website) to figure it out. Just plug the ingredients in and the servings and it will give you all that info.

  9. If you’re allergic to almonds what alternatives can be used!?

    1. Hi J- you can use another nut flour if you can find it. I’ve seen cashew flour at Trader Joes. Or you can use cassava flour in place of it and even a gluten free flour mix would work. I hope that helps answer your question!

  10. Could I double the recipe and put it in a 9×13 cake pan?

    1. Hi Dina- I think that would work great! Enjoy!

  11. Kathy says:

did you use a hand or stand mixer for mixing the first two layers? And a whisk for the chocolate layer? Can’t wait to try.

    1. Hi Kathy- sorry for the delayed response! Nope- the first two layers are just mixed by hand. Yes, I do whisk the chocolate mixture. Hope you love them!

  12. Terry says:

These are crazy delicious. I didn’t even tell anyone they’re paleo and everyone gobbled them up.

    1. Thanks for trying them and for the great feedback, Terry! I’m so glad they were enjoyed!

  13. Nichole says:

I am not a fan of the flavor coconut oil gives to many of the paleo recipes…(or any “healthy” recipe for that matter;D)…
Could I substitute it with the unflavored coconut cooking oil for this recipe? Or do you think it would alter the recipe in a negative way??
It’s already liquid, but I didn’t know if there was some kind of a difference that would ruin affect the way it turned out.. I hate to waste! Especially, our “paleo groceries”! $$$ :'(

By the way, thank you for sharing this fantastic recipe!
I love Twix and I can’t wait to try!

    1. Hi Nichole- refined coconut oil doesn’t have a coconut flavor. That should work great. You’re welcome. I hope you love them!

  14. Francine says:

Could I replace the “caramel” layer with peanut butter?
