Coconut Oil Chex Mix

Chex Mix is such a popular snack food! Whether you make it yourself or buy it from the store- chances are you’ve had it at some point in your life. Homemade is definitely my favorite though and this coconut oil version is the best!

I love how easy this Chex Mix is to make! 5 minutes prep time, then an hour in the oven which is mostly hands off. The result is a huge tray of snack mix that everyone will enjoy!

One important part of this recipe is to stir it every 15 minutes. This ensures all the pieces get cooked evenly and there are no burned Chex. I know there are recipes that call for the microwave and can be made in under 10 minutes, but I don’t think they are even close as good as the traditional oven method. This is how I have always done it and the results are always great. And an added bonus- your house will smell amazing while it’s cooking. It’s one of the best parts in my opinion.

The original calls for Worcestershire sauce, but I decided I wanted to use Coconut Aminos. I always have a bottle on hand and love the flavor it adds to everything. If you’re not familiar with coconut aminos, it is a savory sauce that is slightly sweeter and less salty than soy sauce. You can find it at any health food store by the soy sauce or on Amazon. It works so great in this recipe- it balances perfectly with the season salt and garlic and onion. It is so delicious! I included a picture so you know what to look for. There are the rest of the ingredients for the “sauce” mixture as well.

Instructions
  1. In a large bowl, combine chex, pretzels, and nuts. Mix and set aside.
  2. Preheat oven to 250° and line a sheet tray with parchment paper.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the coconut oil, coconut aminos, season salt, onion powder and garlic powder. Pour over the chex mixture and toss until evenly coated. A spatula works great for that.

  1. Yes, yes, 100% yes. This stuff looks SO good but so addicting! Dying to try it out!

    1. Thank you so much, Karly! I hope you enjoy it 🙂

  2. J Jop says:

Can i do the recipe without pretzels? Or just all cereal???

    1. Yes, that will work. Just replace the pretzels with cereal. Enjoy!

  3. Peggy Brown says:

If I sub aminos with Worcestershire do I still use the 1/4c? That’s quite a bit more than the recipe.

    1. Hi Peggy- you mean liquid aminos? I would reduce to 2 tablespoons. Coconut aminos aren’t as salty. Hope that helps.

  4. I have made this several times and here’s how I made it my own.

I couldn’t find a clean season salt locally so I made my own with pink Himalayan salt, black pepper and paprika.
I doubled the garlic powder and onion powder for more flavor. This mimics the flavor of the “bold” variety sold in stores.
I added 3/4 cup coconut aminos for extra flavor.

We have made this so many times and it’s always gone so quickly at parties! I have to keep a little container to the side so I can have some. It’s easy to sub sunflower or pumpkin seeds for nuts if you have anyone with a nut allergy.

    1. Thanks for trying it so many times, Rea! I’m so glad you enjoy it! I love that you make the seasoning yourself- that sounds tasty. Thanks for the great feedback!
