I first bought blackstrap molasses for the potassium content as I eat high potassium foods instead of taking supplements/drugs.
I was somewhat disappointed that you do not list the potassium content along with the sodium content. I bought a quart of your golden barrel blackstrap molasses, but will look for one that does list the potassium in the future.

    • Mitch Hertzler

Hi Betty, thanks for the review. We actually do list Potassium and Sodium on our nutritional panel of each label. You can see it if you click on the image above of the nutritional information. Hopefully, you will reconsider the 2 star rating that you left.

When my husband broke his leg the Dr, suggested he drink a glass of milk daily with a generous amount of blackstrap molasses mixed in. True story!

  5. John Fessler

My wife uses Blackstrap molasses for years, baking cookies cakes adding to tea coffee. We order by the case and give to family & friends. Great product.

  6. Michael B.

I purchased 4 gallons of Blackstrap molasses last year on thru the website and recently another gallon at the company store, I love this product. I use it out of the bottle as a daily health supplement (tastes great) and also as part of a organic fertilizer mix for my fruit and vegetable crops. I am not sure if I or my crops are more heather.

  7. Carol Stoltenburg (verified owner)

The best product for the money, even with paying for shipping. I love the flavor. I add the molasses to hot water each morning, then squirt in some lime juice. Great way to get extra calcium in my diet.

  8. BARBARA

I love the blackstrap molasses I use it for baking and it makes my baked goods taste better. It is much better than the stuff you buy off the shelf.

  9. Paula Loring

I started buying the small jar. Hubby loved it so much we wound up buying the big gallon jug! I am so excited! I recently found a very old recipe from when I was a child for a molasses candy that I just loved. I haven’t had it since I was a kid but if all goes well it may become Christmas gifts. Sis did the Butterscotch candy. But for me it had to be the molasses candy. A+ molasses! The best!

  10. Christina Miller

We purchased gallon containers of the Blackstrap Molasses and we love it so far for baking and we use it in our homemade energy drinks as well! Great value!

  11. carolyn sauerbrei

My daughter gave me enough molasses
For one arch of cookies. Very good.

  12. m kelly

I use this for extra calcium. The jar I had contained 20% calcium. I just reordered and my jars say 12% calcium. Why the difference?? I do love your product!!!!!!

    • Mitch Hertzler

Hi, due to upcoming FDA required label changes for nutritional panels, we recently updated our labels. Along with those updates were come recalculations based on the USDA recommend averages for calcium and other minerals for blackstrap molasses. It is still the same molasses as always just with an updated nutritional panel.

  13. Frank

Just purchased a pint of your Blackstrap Molasses for the first time .why are they so thin ? the texture is that like pancake syrup I do not like watery molasses please explain. What I have been buying has the texture of cane syrup why the bitter taste. thanks

    • Mitch Hertzler

      Hi Frank,
Molasses should be quite consistent in how thick it is since it is all made to the same Brix of 79-80. If your’s is exceptionally thin, then either it is being stored in rather a warm area or there could be something wrong with the batch that you received. As far as bitterness, blackstrap molasses naturally has a very strong flavor due to the fact that much of the sugar has been removed. The result is a more dense molasses with strong flavor and higher mineral content. It sounds like what you are used to is more like our Supreme Baking Molasses which has much sweeter and pleasant taste.

  14. madhu

Heard it for the first time and extremely interested in purchasing. However, sounds ridiculous to pay Ground (UPS) shipping : $22.35 for an $8 item. I wish the shipping charges were reasonable for first time customer.

  15. Luz

    Hi
I would like to know after I opened I have to put it to the refrigerator or it’s ok to keep out ?
    Thnx

    • Mitch Hertzler

      Hi Luz,
Our molasses is very shelf stable and can be stored in a regular cupboard or pantry. Refrigeration is nor required.

You know sometimes when you find a really good product …and you are actually concerned to leave a good review…for fear the product will become sold out or triple in price…This is one such product for me.. Tempted to leave a one star, but I won’t be an a-hole today.

  17. Cascadia

    Hello,
Would like to know if this is safe to consume? The warning label states that consuming this product can cause cancer.

    Thanks

    • Mitch Hertzler

This subject is confusing and controversial right now. The bottom line is that the state of California has come up with their own list of chemicals and thresholds that they believe could be harmful. Trace amounts of lead and acrylamide are naturally occurring in sugarcane which is concentrated with other minerals in blackstrap molasses. Because California has this list and threshold, any item that is being sold in CA containing lead requires this warning.

If blackstrap molasses is found being sold in California without this warning, anyone can bring a lawsuit against the manufacture which has happened to almost every brand and maker of blackstrap molasses. A similar lawsuit is currently ongoing with the coffee industry as they have acrylamide that California says need the same warning. You can Google coffee and Prop 65 for reference.

So to sum it up, blackstrap molasses has not changed and we are not adding any lead. It is a very small amount and is naturally occurring.

  18. Kathy par

I didn’t read the label until after I purchased the molasses that genetically engineered sugarcane is used in the manufacturing process. I was so disappointed.

    • Mitch Hertzler

Hi Kathy, I think that you may have read the label wrong. It should say, “Made from sugar cane that was not genetically engineered.” Also, all of our newer labels have the Non-GMO Verified logo on them.

  19. Cathy

On the bottle it says it can cause reproductive harm. Is this true? If I take one TSPB daily will it affect my future chances of having a baby??

    • Mitch Hertzler

      Hi Cathy,

This subject is confusing and controversial right now. The bottom line is that the state of California has come up with their own list of chemicals and thresholds that they believe could be harmful. Trace amounts of lead and acrylamide are naturally occurring in sugarcane which is concentrated with other minerals in blackstrap molasses. There is no actual evidence that the lead or acrylamide in molasses could lead to any defects but because California has this list and threshold, any item that is being sold in CA containing lead requires this warning.

  20. Cathy

The answer you gave me is literally a copy and paste of an answer you gave to other people… seriously man? Do better

    • Mitch Hertzler

      Hi Cathy,

Yes, it was a copy and paste answer. This is such a frequently asked question right now that standardized responses are often used for consistency and efficiency sake. Sorry about that.

  21. Minnie Ma

What is the concentration level of lead and acrylamide? Can you specify the level/content? I cannot find it anywhere and your answer has been vague as to exactly what is the concentration.

    • Mitch Hertzler

Hi Minnie, as of the last test, blackstrap molasses contains 0.3 parts per million of lead. Parts per million refers to one item in a million of anything of the same size. In comparison, blackstrap molasses contains 22,200 parts per million of potassium. Acrylamide was last tested at 0.333 parts per million.

  22. Cinnamon Lindauere

    To Mitch Hertzler,

Thank you. I’ve been cooking with molasses all my life. I make my own brown sugar with it. It is, and has always been, a staple. I just opened a new gallon. I have five children ranging in ages from tiny to teen, so I became alarmed at the lead warning I’d never seen on a label before. I began looking through the internet for answers, but I am not great at swimming in swampy waters. I’ve read every post on this thread, and I just wanted to say I appreciate the straightforward way you answered these questions. The exact information, and your matter-of-fact expression, put my heart at ease. I’m going back to cooking now. I hope you carry on carrying on, sir.

  23. Judy

Molasses is a preferred source of sweetener for me, along with maqple syrup and raw honey. I add molaqsses to tomato paste (half&half) and spread it atop meat loaf – healthier than commercial brand ketsups. I’m not concerned about the miniscule amount of naturally occurring lead (3/10 of 1 %) because molasses has been in use for hundreds of years, and has minerals our bodies need but don’t get enough of in our diet. Sugar is definitely responsible for much of the poor health of Americans who eat so much of it. The label says 1TB contains 10g sugar, which consists of 10g ADDED sugar. What is the source of the added sugar? And why is it added?

    • Mitch Hertzler

      Hi Judy,
Thanks for using our molasses. To answer the added sugar question, this is actually pretty confusing. We are not actually adding any sugar to the molasses. Unfortunately, due to the way the FDA defines added sugars for this type of product, these will be added sugars in a finished good containing molasses. All of the sugars are naturally occurring. I hope that this makes sense.

  24. Juhi Varma

I was very excited to discover Golden Barrel’s Black Strap Molasses. I have consumed at least two jars worth of the stuff this year. So I am extremely worried about the Warning label that I just noticed, it says it may contain lead which may cause cancer and reproductive harm and birth defects. This is supposed to be a health food. Should I just toss the jar?

    • Mitch Hertzler

      Hi Juhi,

The following is a general statement that we have been giving to customers with the same question:

This subject is confusing and controversial right now. The bottom line is that the state of California has come up with their own list of chemicals and thresholds that they believe could be harmful. Trace amounts of lead is naturally occurring in sugarcane which is concentrated with other minerals in blackstrap molasses. There is no actual evidence that the lead in molasses could lead to any defects but because California has this list and threshold, any item that is being sold in CA containing lead requires this warning. The amount of lead in blackstrap molasses is 0.3 parts per million. The FDA does not have an official threshold for lead in foods but gives this statement from their website, “Lead, like other heavy metals, does not biodegrade or disappear from the environment over time. Although lead levels in the food supply decreased dramatically between the 1970s-1990s, low levels of lead continue to be detected in some foods due to the continued presence of lead in the environment. It is not possible to remove or completely prevent lead from entering the food supply.”

    Do you need to refrigerate

    • Mitch Hertzler

Hi, refrigeration is not necessary. It can be stored in a regular cupboard or pantry.

  26. DJ

I have been reading about Blackstrap Molasses and all it benefits, but after I read and saw the lead warning label/ cancer risk for California, it leaves a big question mark ❓ in my head!! Is it safe if don’t live in California or is it still dangerous!!

  27. Eric & Brenda (verified owner)

Excellent product with outstanding benefits to health! We’ve been using this daily for over 2 years now.

  28. Wally Raw

Hi, Just purchased you product and I just love it. Put some in my overnight oatmeal mix. Wow, it is like night and day. I do have one question. I see there is a lot of added sugar, 10g. Is that really additional, added sugar or just the product itself that has sugar in it?

    • Mitch Hertzler

Hi, Thanks for using our molasses. That is a good question about the 10g of added sugar. It is quite confusing. There is no actual sugar added to the molasses but the way that the FDA defined it as applying to molasses it would be the natural occurring molasses that would be added to a recipe when using the molasses. Hope this makes sense.

  29. Alicia E.

I have a question about the warning label and risk for pregnant women…I’m 6 months pregnant and have been using this product for 4 days. I love the product but am concerned about the chemicals listed-is this an over precaution that CA requires? I know the chemicals are caused by the extreme heat used in cooking the product.

  30. Beverly

My husband was raised in Vermont and worked on a farm. Everyday, he would put a heaping cupful of molasses on hay for the cows. They loved it and so did he as he took a tablespoon for himself. It must have done something for him as he turns 90 this year.

  31. Dr.Keran patkar

Sir you are great . You have answered all questions regarding health warning nicely. People don’t understand FDA language as it is more technical . You have explained in simple way.
    I’m from india.

  32. Frances Goodwin

Just had Golden Barrel with hot buttered biscuits. Can’t get better than that!

  33. Joe

I suffer from anemia to the point that blood tests frequently show my body’s iron stores as almost completely depleted. I have tried various iron supplements both OTC and prescription (Ferrex 150 twice a day!) as ordered by my doctor, and iron levels in my blood barely budged. So on the suggestion of one the nurses, I started eating a couple tablespoons of Golden Barrel Unsulfured Blackstrap Molasses every day between meals. I don’t know the science behind it, but apparently blackstrap molasses has a type of iron in much more readily absorbed by the body, because my iron levels have steadily been coming up with each blood test. This stuff has literally improved my health and quality of life in a measurable and documented way. Looks like you’ve got a life-long customer on your hands now.

  34. Glenn W., Ashland, VA

I have to say that I was presently surprised about the quality and affordability of this product. I’ve been buying the 1gal container for about 2yrs and can’t say enough good things about the many healthy uses of this delicious product. I take a couple tbsp in the morning, and a couple tbsp in the evening and I have so much energy and it has helped my GI health tremendously. I’ve also noticed that my hair & skin looks much better that is has in many years. Goes great with hot/cold cereal, decaf coffee or coffee substitute. Great replacement for brown sugar!

  35. Lilly

I really love the flavor of your black strap molasses, I’m a diabetic so my question is what is the total amount of sugar per serving. Thank you.

  36. Mary

This is great tasting, thinner then before but so yummy. How much is the total sugar content. My label says 11 grams sugar and under it it says included 11 grams of added sugar. So is the total 11 or 22 grams. Thanks

  37. Leslie Morantine

Hi, can I put this on pancakes and waffles? I’m not diabetic but I find the syrup too sweet almost to the point of making me sick.

  38. Ed McLendon

In use Golden Barrel Blackstrap Molasses for feeding my potted plants. It works great for greener healthier plants! You must dilute it with water first, approximately 2 TBS per gallon, then apply to base of plants.

  39. Juli

I’ve been taking your molasses for almost a year now and I love it. In my morning coffee and I make a tea with it in the evenings. After about 45-days of taking it my hair has never looked better. I take 2-Tbls. A day.
